Simply The Best!

We capped off our amazing visit to Europe with 6 days in Burgundy at Chez Hall, and it simply wasn't enough!

Chez Hall is our new favourite "Home Away from Home" - The property is stunning, everything works so well, is tasteful and charming, and is so comfortable and user friendly! And FINALLY - a (big) bath! Luxurious to the extreme. Overall, just a perfect place to visit, stay, entertain, spend quality time, relax and enjoy!

Lazy afternoons on the deck cooking (and eating) gourmet food - not to mention the best pizzas you could ever get from the fabulous pizza oven - with a (number) of glasses of wine were just pure heaven. Everything is perfect, from the location, the view, the setting, the fabulous attention to detail in everything in the property (nice work Kay!) and the lovely town of Meursault and surrounds has absolutely everything that a wine and food lover could possible want! The main House has an amazing kitchen, and the fully decked out "Barn" comfortably housed the four of us. In fact, after 3 weeks of high end hotels, it was easily our kid’s favourite place they had been, with my Son ever stating that when he grows up, he wants to move over here!

Highly recommended, and one of the real highlights of our amazing visit - Thanks once again Anthony and Kay!

Burgundy's Finest Accommodation

Finding comfortable accommodation in Burgundy has always been a problem. Whilst I love the ancient stone buildings, I have in the past found many apartments or hotels small, drab and not particularly comfortable.

On my last trip I decided to stay at Chez Hall @ Meursault. The property was created from a winemakers house and other associated buildings (including a terrific cave) and has been painstakingly renovated by local artisan craftsmen. It is a large property comprising three separate rentals. I enjoyed the comfort and luxury of the main house - a delightful, airy, spacious and well furnished home-away-from-home.

Having spent almost two weeks in Bordeaux and the southwest it was a great pleasure to stay somewhere where everything worked just like home! The shower had plenty of gloriously hot water, the internet functioned all the time, the kitchen was fully equipped (including a magnificent oven which can be hard to find in France) and there were even some English channels on TV! We used the second floor verandah one balmy evening and enjoyed the views over the vineyards of Meursault.

Chez Hall is just around the corner from the main square which has a small supermarket and a number of specialist shops including a wine store with a very good selection of local wines. Beaune is just ten minutes away.

Chez Hall @ Meursault is a grand property with mountains of space, lovely antiques, a brilliant location and lots of little extras. It is a great base for the businessman or family enjoying a luxurious holiday in the world’s best wine area.

You'll have a ball, Chez Hall

We had a wonderful week Chez Hall in May this year. All levels of accommodation are truly world class and have been restored immaculately, with the ‘thumbs up’ even been given by the local Maire. All fixtures and fittings are first rate, the kitchen is wonderful and private deck perfect to watch the sun glisten through Monsieur Coche’s Rougeots vineyard late in the day with glass of white Burg in Hand.

It is a great venue to host some of the local wine personalities and we very much enjoyed cooking and entertaining for some of our wine friends. Stemware and every type of wine gadget will ensure appropriate opening and serving of some of the rare, old gems you purchase from the cave in Chassagne and the local butcher, a mere 30 second stagger around the corner can fix you up with all of your protein requirements. When you tire of cooking your own food, there’s a multitude of restaurants in nearby villages and information is provided as to where to eat.

Should you be sick of eating, drinking and entertaining (and we were not by the way) there is satellite television with many English channels. Fortunately Anthony hasn’t left any of his dire straits albums in the house but you can plug your ipod in, turn up the volume and frighten the neighbours with some loud ‘acca dacc’a should you wish to (we didn’t Anthony and Kay, promise). A special mention for the main shower, the very best shower in France that is totally tonic and revitalising the next morning after one too many Chambertin the night before.

An added benefit is the local access to David and Sue, the restorers of this marvellous building and English speaking locals who have an intimate knowledge of the region. Chez Hall is perfectly located to traverse the Cote d’Or and we hope to make this our base each year for our annual stay in the region.

The perfect place for a Grand Cru or three

We rented the three properties together in August 2011 as both a base to explore the region and as a place to enjoy some of the great wines that we knew we would find while there. We could not have made a better choice. Everything was absolutely tip top, from the location in Meursault, to the very well equiped kitchen and dining space (especially stemware) and great detailing throughout the house(s). There has been real care and thought put into the properties and it shows.

As per comments above, the town of Meursault is well stocked for all your food needs, including a farmers market when we were there, and has a great wine store if you fancy expanding your tasting into the rest of Burgundy (which you no doubt will want to do!). The wood burning oven, bbq's and kitchen (with range cooker) will give the keen chef a myriad of cooking options to match up a with few good wines, and there are a number of good restaurants nearby that David and Su will be able to help you with. For those keen to cycle around a bit, there is a dedicated cycle path running through the vineyards north and south of Meursault, and it passes right by the house gates. In short, plenty of options to make your stay great!

Thank you for making this gem available for us to enjoy.

What a gem!

The fifth week of our six week European holiday and we had the very good fortune to find ourselves for six days in this little gem.  A lovely, quiet little town and a very pleasant petite maison for six days.   As locations go, this is well positioned.  We managed trips to several points of interest within two hours of  the area.   If you can stand the current traffic chaos while the tram lines are being installed, Dijon was a good location - best not on a Tuesday, which seems to be the Dijon version of what passes for closed-on-Monday in the rest of France. Besancon, our last outing, was a highlight and worth special mention. If you venture to try one of the local walking trips, take the time to visit the Tourisme office in the village square and get acquainted with what they mean with "signs".  Once you know what to look for, the guidance is great- you just need to know what to look for ! The cottage itself is great - particularly well suited for a couple.   Kitchen / cooking facilities put other locations to shame - there's even a nespresso machine to compliment the full oven, microwave, dishwasher and stovetop.  Crockery, cutlery and glassware you'd be happy to have at home! Internet access "just worked" and, happily, was not tied to one device!  TV, cable, DVD and iPod player all there - perhaps we should have looked more thoroughly in case we stumbled on a concealed swimming pool, gymnasium and helicopter pad (perhaps next door?) ;) The upstairs bedroom and ensuite were equally well appointed  - the shower begs to be used for what would be a criminal amount of time back home in OZ! A lovely way to be winding down our holiday.

The cottage was the best !

I thoroughly enjoyed the cottage and it was certainly the highlight of my accomodation throughout my trip (except my daughter's house (being politically correct)). I stayed in several 'top quality' venues (brand new hotel in Ampuis & an excellent house near Avignon (the tenant after me was an American major movie producer & his family who had stayed there before)) but the Cottage was the best.

I found your cottage was a great place to stay as it is so comfortable and quiet. Everything required is to hand where you expect it (for example light switches and the many power points) and the high quality fittings & decorations add to the ambience. A spacious kitchen with ample bench space, all cooking utensils required were available for a wide range of dishes – including pots and pans with lids, full set of sharp knives (Sabatier), excellent easy to use oven, four electric hotplates, ample refrigerator, wide range of crockery, excellent glassware, full set of cutlery, several chopping boards & a very effective dishwasher. The lounge had some very comfortable chairs (I had an afternoon nap in one) & an open fire with a stack of cut wood ready to go. The spacious bedroom and ensuite with a sensational shower & an easy to use combined washing maching/dryer. Not that I do much ironing but to have a proper ironing board & a high quality iron made it all too easy. The fast reliable internet that doesn’t randomly reset itself made a great difference to the amount of time spent on emails. All in all easy comfort that made it very difficult to leave.
